A brief history of Bohemia - the country
Bohemia is a historic region in central Europe, located in what is now the western part of the Czech Republic. Its name comes from the Boii, a Celtic tribe that inhabited the area around the 4th century BCE. By the 6th century CE, Slavic peoples had settled the region, forming the basis of the modern Czech nation.
In the 9th century, Bohemia became part of Great Moravia, but soon after, it emerged as an independent duchy under the Přemyslid dynasty, which was later elevated to a kingdom in 1198. The Kingdom of Bohemia played a major role in medieval European politics and was one of the most powerful states in the Holy Roman Empire. Its rulers, like Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia in the 14th century, made Prague a major cultural and political centre.
The 15th century saw the Hussite Wars, a series of religious conflicts sparked by the teachings of reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake in 1415. These wars weakened Bohemia, and in 1526, the kingdom came under Habsburg rule, integrating it into the Austrian Empire.
Bohemia remained part of the Habsburg lands for centuries, experiencing industrial growth in the 19th century but also increasing Czech nationalism. After World War I and the fall of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Bohemia became a core part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia.
Guide to Bohemian Interior Design
What Is Bohemian Interior Design?
Bohemian design, often called boho style, is a relaxed, eclectic approach to interior and fashion aesthetics that celebrates creativity, individuality, and cultural expression. Rooted in the free-spirited lifestyles of 19th-century artists, writers, and travellers, particularly in France and later influenced by Romani culture, the style embraces a lived-in, collected-over-time look.
In interiors, bohemian design is characterised by rich textures, layered textiles, and global influences. You'll often see vibrant colours like deep purples, burnt oranges, and earthy greens, mixed with natural materials such as rattan, jute, and wood. Pattern is key, Moroccan rugs, Indian block prints, and embroidered cushions are often combined in unexpected ways.
Though originally quite maximalist, modern bohemian design can also be toned down, known as boho-chic or Scandi-boho, by blending it with minimalist or rustic elements.
Ultimately, bohemian design is less about rules and more about freedom, comfort, and self-expression, making it a favourite for creative, unconventional spirits.
Where did Boho fashion originate from
The Humble Beginnings
Bohemian fashion originated in the early 19th century as a rejection of mainstream bourgeois style. Inspired by the free-spirited lifestyles of artists, writers, and intellectuals, many of whom were impoverished and nomadic, it drew heavily from Romani dress, peasant clothing, and Eastern influences. Flowing fabrics, layered garments, embroidery, and exotic prints became central features. The movement gained momentum during the Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau periods, embracing natural beauty and artistic rebellion. By the 1960s and '70s, bohemian fashion was revived by the counterculture and hippie movements, which embraced its anti-establishment roots, love of nature, and world-travel aesthetic. Today, boho fashion continues to celebrate individuality, comfort, and creativity, often blending vintage, ethnic, and handcrafted styles.
Why were they labelled as 'Bohemian'?
The term “bohemian” was first used in 19th-century France to describe artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived unconventional, often impoverished lives. These free spirits rejected bourgeois norms and embraced creativity, travel, and nonconformity. The label came from the mistaken belief that Romani people, who were stereotypically seen as wandering outsiders, came from Bohemia, a region in Central Europe. Over time, the term evolved to symbolise a broader lifestyle marked by artistic freedom, rebellion against social conventions, and a preference for beauty, experience, and self-expression over material wealth. “Bohemian” became both a cultural identity and a romanticised ideal of the creative outsider.
How are Bohemian/Boho Interiors experienced
Bohemian interiors are eclectic, expressive, and layered with texture. Key features include rich textiles like macramé, kilims, and embroidered cushions, often mixed across bold patterns and vibrant colours such as ochre, teal, deep purples, and earthy tones. Natural materials like rattan, jute, wood, and leather ground the space, while plants, often abundant, add life and a sense of connection to nature. Furniture tends to be vintage or globally inspired, with a relaxed, collected-over-time feel. Handcrafted items, cultural artefacts, and travel souvenirs are common, telling a personal story. Layered rugs, low seating, candles, and ambient lighting create a warm, inviting atmosphere that celebrates comfort, creativity, and individuality.

✨ About Me ✨
I've always believed that a home is more than four walls, it's a reflection of the soul that lives within it. For me, design isn't about perfection or trends; it's about creating spaces that feel alive, layered with stories, colours, and textures that speak to who you are.
Boho Laine grew from my love of bohemian style, where every corner holds meaning and every object has a story. With a mix of vintage finds, soulful touches, and natural textures, I help transform plain rooms into sanctuaries, places that feel grounding, inspiring, and truly your own.
I believe your home soothes your soul. It's a place you should instantly feel at peace in and anyone who enters. Boho interiors offer that in abundance. Its free-spirited, inspiring and it allows those parts of you to be seen.
Whether I'm reimagining a bedroom, a living room, or an outdoor space, my approach is always the same: listen deeply, design with heart, and let the space breathe with warmth and magic.

This space began as a neutral living room with standard furniture and minimal character. Through layered textiles, colour, plants and handcrafted pieces, the room was gradually transformed into a warm bohemian sanctuary designed for comfort and atmosphere.
Chilled Boho Bedroom & Office This bedroom redesign blends academic-inspired styling with relaxed bohemian elements to create a warm and atmospheric personal space. A celestial tapestry anchors the room visually and establishes the colour palette. Draped fabrics and soft lighting above the bed create a canopy effect, while layered textiles and plants introduce texture and warmth. The workspace was positioned by the window to maximise natural light, supporting both study and relaxation within the same cohesive environment.
A Dark Academia Inspired Bedroom with Bohemian Touches This bedroom was designed to reflect a love of literature, creativity and calm study spaces. Inspired by the dark academia aesthetic, the room blends vintage artwork, books and warm wood with plants and layered textures to soften the space and introduce a subtle bohemian influence.
This bedroom began as a neutral, functional space , but it lacked warmth, depth, and connection. The aim was to create a calm, layered sanctuary using soft lighting, natural textures, and meaningful details. Through the addition of macramé, woven textiles, trailing plants, and ambient lighting, the space was transformed into a room that feels grounded, cosy, and deeply personal. What was once simply a place to sleep is now a space to unwind, recharge, and feel at ease.
Even the smallest spaces can change how your home feels. This was a small downstairs toilet, purely functional, easy to overlook. My aim wasn't to redesign it completely, but to change how it felt. By layering soft textures, natural elements, and simple styling details, the space became calmer, warmer, and more intentional. Because when a space feels considered, no matter how small, it changes your whole experience of your home. Helping to transform everyday spaces into places that feel like part of you again.
The Vision
This outdoor space began as an open garage and patio area that lacked warmth, character and a clear purpose. The aim was to transform it into a relaxing bohemian-inspired garden retreat , a space designed for unwinding, gathering with friends and enjoying peaceful evenings outdoors.
The Transformation
The design focused on layering textiles, lighting and natural materials to soften the structure and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Draped fabrics were added across the ceiling to form a canopy effect, introducing colour, movement and a sense of intimacy. Persian-style rugs were used to define seating areas, while lanterns, candles and soft lighting help the space transition beautifully from day to evening.
Rustic furniture, plants and decorative details were carefully chosen to bring texture and personality, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living.
The Result
The finished space is a cosy bohemian garden retreat that feels welcoming, relaxed and full of character. What was once an unused outdoor structure is now a beautiful sanctuary designed for relaxation, conversation and atmospheric evenings under soft candlelight.

Create a home filled with warmth, glow and layered beauty
Through online bohemian interior styling, Boho Laine transforms ordinary rooms into rich, atmospheric spaces filled with texture, light and personality.
Homes Should Feel Personal
A home should feel warm, layered and full of character, not like a showroom where everything matches perfectly but nothing has a story. The most inviting spaces are the ones that feel collected over time, filled with textures, objects and details that reflect the people who live there. Boho Laine helps transform ordinary rooms into soulful interiors through thoughtful styling, layered textures and meaningful pieces that bring warmth and atmosphere into your home.
The Boho Laine Approach
Every Boho Laine design considers the whole space, furniture, colour, textiles, lighting and the small details that bring everything together. Rather than focusing on a single element, each space is styled as a complete atmosphere where texture, light and layered pieces work together to create warmth, character and balance.
Atmosphere Lighting and colour set the mood of a room. Soft lamps, candles and warm tones create a gentle glow that makes a space feel calm and welcoming from day to night.
Texture Layered fabrics and natural materials bring comfort and depth to a room. Curtains, rugs, cushions and woven textures help create interiors that feel rich and inviting.
Story The most beautiful rooms include pieces with meaning. Furniture, artwork and collected objects give a space personality and make a home feel truly yours.
